Transforming a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van with 3M 2080 Gloss Black Vinyl Wrap & IGL Shield Ceramic Coating

At Southern Stylez Tinting in Wilmington, NC, we recently had the opportunity to completely transform a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van from white to gloss black with a stunning 3M 2080 Gloss Black vinyl wrap. The project didn’t stop there—we added custom graphics on top of the wrap and sealed everything with IGL Shield ceramic coating for maximum protection.

Considering a vinyl wrap for your vehicle? Read on to learn about the benefits of each product we used and whether vinyl wrap is the right choice for you.

3M 2080 Gloss Black Vinyl Wrap

3M 2080 is one of the industry’s top vinyl wrap materials, known for its flawless finish and long-lasting durability. It provides a complete color change without requiring a permanent paint job and is designed to last up to eight years (8 Years Vertical Surfaces / 3 Years Horizontal Surfaces) with proper care. This wrap resists fading, peeling, and environmental wear while also protecting the factory paint from minor scratches, rock chips, and UV exposure.

Key Benefits:

  • Cost-effective alternative to paint: A full repaint can be expensive, but vinyl wrap offers a more affordable option for changing a vehicle’s look.
  • High-gloss, sleek finish: The deep shine of 3M 2080 rivals the look of premium automotive paint.
  • Paint protection: Acts as a shield against everyday wear, helping maintain the vehicle’s original paint.
  • Easily removable: Unlike paint, a vinyl wrap can be removed without damaging the surface beneath – if removed within the recommended timespan.

Custom Graphics Application

After wrapping the Sprinter Van in gloss black, we took customization a step further by applying custom-cut graphics. Vinyl graphics are an excellent option for businesses that want to add branding or unique designs to their vehicles without the permanence of traditional paint.

Why Choose Vinyl Graphics?

Great for branding: Turn your vehicle into a mobile advertisement with eye-catching graphics.

Weather-resistant: Designed to withstand sun exposure, rain, and everyday wear.

IGL Shield Ceramic Coating for Vinyl Wraps

To enhance and protect the vinyl wrap, we applied IGL Shield ceramic coating. This specialized coating is designed specifically for vinyl, adding an extra layer of durability and protection.

Advantages of Ceramic Coating on Vinyl Wrap:

  • Hydrophobic properties: Repels water, dirt, and contaminants, making the wrap easier to clean.
  • UV resistance: Helps prevent fading and sun damage, extending the wrap’s lifespan.
  • Enhanced gloss and smoothness: Gives the vinyl an even deeper, more premium shine.
  • Increases longevity: Reduces oxidation and wear, ensuring the wrap stays in top condition for years..

Should You Choose Vinyl Wrap for Your Vehicle?

Vinyl wraps offer a practical and stylish solution for those looking to change their vehicle’s appearance without committing to paint.

Here’s why many vehicle owners choose vinyl wraps:

  1. More affordable than paint – A full vehicle wrap is significantly cheaper than a high-quality paint job. (Price varies per material chosen and vehicle, however most vehicles can be wrapped for $3,800 – $6,800)
  2. Customizable – Available in a variety of colors, finishes, and textures, including matte, gloss, satin, and carbon fiber.
  3. Quick installation – Wrapping a vehicle takes much less time than a full repaint, minimizing downtime. (Most vehicles can be wrapped in 1 week)
  4. Protects the original paint – Acts as a barrier against UV rays, minor scratches, and road debris.
  5. Removable – When you’re ready for a change, the wrap can be taken off without affecting the original paint – if removed within the recommended timespan.

However, there are a few things to consider before choosing a vinyl wrap:

  1. Not a permanent solution – While durable, wraps are not designed to last as long as paint and will eventually need to be replaced.
  2. Original Paint Visible – While a full wrap does cover a lot, some areas will still show original paint color. Various degrees of installation are available, however, the more a vehicle is disassembled in order to hide more paint, the higher the pricing and installation time will be.
  3. Requires maintenance – Regular cleaning is necessary to keep the wrap looking its best.
  4. Not damage-proof – While it protects against minor scratches, deep scratches and impacts will still impact the vehicle’s paint and surface.
  5. Quality matters – Poor installation or low-quality vinyl can lead to peeling, bubbling, and premature wear. Make sure you choose a professional and not the “cheapest installer.”
